Hygge
The Danish art of cozy contentment

Understanding Hygge
Hygge (pronounced /ˈh(j)uːɡə/ or H(Y)OO-gə) is a Danish and Norwegian word that describes a feeling of cozy contentment and well-being through enjoying the simple things in life. It's about creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people.
The origins of hygge
The word hygge dates back to around 1800, though the concept is much older. It comes from a Norwegian word meaning "to give courage, comfort, joy." Hygge is deeply embedded in Danish culture and is often credited as one of the reasons Denmark consistently ranks among the world's happiest countries.
Core elements of hygge
- Atmosphere - Soft lighting, especially candles (Denmark uses more candles per capita than any other country)
- Presence - Being present in the moment, putting away phones and distractions
- Pleasure - Indulging in simple pleasures like coffee, pastries, or chocolate
- Equality - Everyone contributes and no one dominates the conversation
- Gratitude - Appreciating what you have rather than wanting more
- Harmony - Avoiding controversial topics and maintaining peaceful interactions
- Comfort - Cozy blankets, comfortable clothing, warm socks
- Truce - Taking a break from life's demands and stresses
- Togetherness - Building and maintaining relationships with loved ones
- Shelter - Creating safe, comfortable spaces in your home
Creating hygge in your home
Transform your living space into a hygge haven:
- Use warm, soft lighting - lamps, fairy lights, and lots of candles
- Add texture with chunky knit blankets, soft pillows, and sheepskin rugs
- Create a hyggekrog (hygge nook) - a cozy corner for reading or relaxing
- Display items that bring joy - photos, books, plants
- Keep spaces clutter-free but not minimal - aim for lived-in comfort
- Use natural materials like wood, wool, and ceramic
- Incorporate warm, neutral colors - think beige, brown, grey, and white
Hygge activities
Simple activities that embody the hygge spirit:
- Reading a book by candlelight
- Enjoying a hot drink while watching the rain
- Board game nights with friends
- Baking bread or cookies from scratch
- Having long, leisurely dinners with loved ones
